Theo Epstein
Theo Epstein, BHS Class of 1991
As General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein helped build the 2004 World Championship Team that ended an 86-year championship drought, bringing euphoria to Red Sox Nation. Only 28 years at the time of his 2002 appointment, Theo was the youngest GM in baseball history and remains the youngest ever to win a World Series, and he is the youngest person ever presented with the BHS 21st Century Fund Gala.

On November 5th, a sell out crowd came to honor Theo and his whole family, distinguished in their own right as well as well as supportive of Brookline High School, the 21st Century Fund, and the community. Theo and his twin brother, Paul (Class of 1991), a social worker at Brookline High, launched a philanthropic organization, The Foundation to Be Named Later. His mother, Ilene, and Aunt Sandy Gradman own and run The Studio, a local women’s clothing boutique and Brookline institution. His sister, Anya (Class of 1988), served as a writer and producer of the television series, Homocide: Life on the Street. Gifted writers run in the family. His father, Leslie, is a novelist, and directs the creative writing program at Boston University. Theo’s grandfather and great uncle wrote and won an Academy Award for Casablanca.

The night of the Gala the 21st Century Fund launched the Epstein Family Fund to raise money in their honor to support programs promoting leadership and citizenship. That night we raised $25,000 for the Fund, and the Gala itself brought in $415,000 overall. Thanks in part to Theo who bought the top auction prize, an exclusive trip to Monte Carlo.
